Have you done the The Camino de Santiago?

I'm doing the camino in july with my sister... we're just doing it for travel purposes and just to get away from everything... but im hearing quite a lot that its done for religious purposes like, but i do believe in God and all but is this a purely religious walk? because is that the type of people who do it!? Any advice would also be great on what to bring, we are doing it for a month!!!
