How to properly remove a fuel line from a car's gas tank?

I've got a 1978 Chevy El Camino with a cracked fuel line and I need to remove it from the car to repair it. The car is all jacked up now and I checked under there, but I'm kinda puzzled how to remove it from the tank and whether or not the tank has to be dropped. Hopefully not because it's full.
